Web App¶
CALVIN includes a FastAPI + React web app for interactively exploring the California water network and optimization results. It can be run locally or accessed at the hosted deployment at calvin-network-app.onrender.com.
Installation¶
pip install "calvin[app]"
Serve Modes¶
The app has three mutually exclusive serve modes.
Hosted — loads a pre-built network and bundled results from data.zip (no local data
required). This is how the public deployment runs on Render:

Local — reads network data from a local calvin-network-data clone and auto-discovers
model runs under ./my-models/:

Any subdirectory of my-models/ that contains a results/ folder is loaded as a study.
Explicit — specify the data path and one or more study directories directly:

Bundling for Deployment¶
To create a self-contained data.zip for hosted deployment:
python -m calvin.app bundle \

This pre-builds the network JSON and packages result CSVs into calvin/app/data.zip.
Commit the zip to the repository and deploy with --hosted.
Render Deployment¶
The app is configured for deployment on Render via render.yaml
at the repository root. The build script is calvin/app/build.sh, which installs Python
dependencies and builds the React frontend.
The start command is:
python -m calvin.app serve --hosted --host 0.0.0.0 --port $PORT
Render injects the $PORT environment variable automatically.
Frontend Development¶
The React frontend lives in calvin/app/frontend/. To run the dev server with hot reload
(proxies /api requests to the FastAPI backend on port 8000):

Path to the calvin-network-data/data directory. Required unless prebuilt_dir is set.
- study_paths:
List of model run directories (each should contain a results/ subdirectory).
- default_study:
Name of the study to make active by default. If None, the first study is used.
- prebuilt_dir:
If set, load pre-built network.geojson + network.json from this directory instead of calling load_network() (hosted mode — avoids reading ~7 000 raw files at startup).
state¶
Application state — loads network data and model results into memory at startup.

Creates a new model setting __dict__ and __pydantic_fields_set__ from trusted or pre-validated data. Default values are respected, but no other validation is performed.

model_construct() generally respects the model_config.extra setting on the provided model. That is, if model_config.extra == ‘allow’, then all extra passed values are added to the model instance’s __dict__ and __pydantic_extra__ fields. If model_config.extra == ‘ignore’ (the default), then all extra passed values are ignored. Because no validation is performed with a call to model_construct(), having model_config.extra == ‘forbid’ does not result in an error if extra values are passed, but they will be ignored.

Generate a dictionary representation of the model, optionally specifying which fields to include or exclude.
- Args:

Compute the class name for parametrizations of generic classes.
This method can be overridden to achieve a custom naming scheme for generic BaseModels.

Model with 2 type variables and a concrete model Model[str, int], the value (str, int) would be passed to params.

Override this method to perform additional initialization after __init__ and model_construct. This is useful if you want to do some validation that requires the entire model to be initialized.

Try to rebuild the pydantic-core schema for the model.
